In Covenant Documents: Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, Wayne Brouwer helps us peek behind the familiar pages of the Bible to find historical, literary and contextual information that bring new vibrancy to old words. His premise is that the internal testimony of the Bible's earliest books assumes a structured, formative event between Israel and its God, known as the Sinai Covenant. Brouwer shows how the various later biblical writings fit into patterns of ancient covenant documents and their historical supplements. Covenant Documents shimmers with fascinating history and literary analysis, providing helpful background, structure, and cultural dynamics that enliven the reading and rereading of the most famous book in the world.
Part introduction, part overview, part handbook, Covenant Documents serves as a great textbook for introductory courses in biblical literature and Christian doctrine. It also functions as a sourcebook for pastors and teachers, and especially as a guide for Bible study groups.

but this is among the very best I have read
By Fargo
Rarely do I find books about the Bible that keep me glued from beginning to end, but this is among the very best I have read. Brouwer gives a coherent perspective on why the books of the Bible belong together, how they have become a meaningful compilation of "scripture" over time, and how the two Testaments meaningfully relate to one another in a symbiotic relationship that transcend mere historical proximity. Every chapter is well-written, and each contains myriad surprises of insight and thoughtful interpretations. Not only that, but there is a collective movement and thrust to the whole, which makes the individual chapters--brilliant as they are--demand a steady engagement.
Brouwer's interpretation of Genesis, placing it in the context of other ancient cosmogonic origins myths as a countervailing exploration of "worldview" is extremely helpful. So, too, is his explanation of the unique role of the land of Canaan/Palestine for religious purposes. Rather than simply playing with ideas of presumed divine promises of land-ownership, Brouwer shows the importance of this territory as an iconic platform for witness and the public international expression of Israel's unique relationship with God.
I had never before comprehended the meaning of "The Day of the Lord," as used frequently by the prophets of the Old Testament. Brouwer claims (and I am inclined to agree) that this term became a sort of code phrase pointing to a needed new act of Israel's God in order to set the world right after Israel's failure to maintain covenant fidelity. Brouwer says that the term included three dominant themes: (1) an international inbreaking of divine judgment against evil; (2) the sparing of a remnant of Israel which would serve as the central element in a renewed humanity; and (3) the inauguration of the messianic kingdom in which the world would again shimmer with its divinely intended significance and glory. What is most fascinating about this is how Brouwer takes this theme into New Testament Christian theology, showing how the church becomes the remnant bridging the former expression of divine covenantal mission partnership with Israel to the new age of global Christian missional expansion. Moreover, Brouwer declares that a key new element introduced in this progression is Jesus' splitting of the promised "Day of the Lord" into two, so that what the prophets saw as a singular event was transformed into doublet: rather than bringing all of the divine judgment, remnant-sparing, and messianic age renewal at a single moment, Jesus entered human history to initiate the blessings of the eternal kingdom, but will return to complete the judgments at a later date. This is a truly remarkable insight into the meaning of the transition from Israel to the Christian Church, and the unique character of Christian theological reinterpretation of the "Day of the Lord" concept. It certainly makes richer sense of many New Testament passages in which the prophetic concept is reapplied to the dual comings of Jesus.
Along with all of this, I must emphasize again that Brouwer's writing is clear, engaging, thoughtful, and filled with gems of interpretive quality that I have rarely found elsewhere. His chapter on the book of Esther is simply outstanding. His comparison of the unique vantage points for telling the meaning of Jesus by the four Gospels is breath-taking. His chapter on the daily life Paul would have experienced in his travels is extremely informative. And his overview of the book of Revelation brought meaning and energy to that book for the first time in my life! I have now read the last book of the Bible and actually think I understand it, both within its original context and as an on-going message of meaning and hope.
I cannot say enough good about this book. I have already purchased copies for my friends who are pastors, and given others to relatives and acquaintances who read and study and teach the Bible. Brouwer obviously loves the Bible, and those who read "Covenant Documents" will find the same happening to them.
