First, a subject that everyone "knows" is difficult and boring can, in the hands of a master teacher, be both exciting and fun. Second, it's a myth that only people particularly adept at mathematics can understand and enjoy physics. Third, superhero comic books have socially redeeming qualities. By combining his love for physics with his love of comic books, University of Minnesota physicist Kakalios has written a book for the general reader covering all of the basic points in a first-level college physics course and is difficult to put down. Among many other things, Kakalios uses the basic laws of physics to "prove" that gravity must have been 15 times greater on Krypton than on Earth; that Spiderman's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, died because his webbing stopped her too abruptly after she plunged from the George Washington Bridge; and that when the Flash runs, he's surrounded by a pocket of air that enables him to breathe. Kakalios draws on the Atom, Iron Man, X-Men, the Ant-Man and the Hulk, among many others, to cover topics as diverse as electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, string theory and thermodynamics. About the Author
James Kakalios is a professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught since 1988, and where his class "Everything I Needed to Know About Physics I Learned from Reading Comic Books" is a popular freshman seminar. He received his Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of Chicago, and has been reading comic books for much longer.

My name is Igor Gamow and I am the son of George Gamow, who was professor of Physics at the University of Colorado and passed away in 1968. He made significant contributions to physics, to cosmology, to quantum mechanics and even biology. He also created, in 1937, the delightful fictitious character C.G.H. Tompkins. Mr. Tompkins, a bank clerk, after listening to popular physics lectures goes home and that night dreams that he is with the scientist, like Einstein, who was the topic of the popular lecture he had attended. In 2008, a few years after retiring, I was inspired to recreate father's famous personage in a more modern world. I have now published, in graphic form, a series of Mr. Tomkins episodes in which he not only meets Albert Einstein but also Aristotle and Rachel Carson to name a few. I have now completed 10 episodes and I have another 10 to go. All these past years I was not aware of Professor Kakalios's The Physics of Super Heroes. Perhaps it was good that I had not known about his book or I might not have started my Tompkins series? That would have been sad because I have so much enjoyed writing my series. My biggest regret is that I did not have his book when I was an undergraduate student studying physics. His book is simply marvelous and I would recommend it to students of all ages.

It got stuff through my skull that I thought I was immune to.

Physics concepts that I'd given up on finally started to make sense. Some them I think I need to go over again, and of course the math would be beyond me. But this book manages to keep the math to a minimum, or at least the minimum it can while still getting the points across. There's no polyvariable calculus in here, though we are briefly shown the Schr�dinger Equation, just to marvel at it.
But of course the very cool thing is learning the answers to questions like:
Just how strong was Krypton's gravity?
Does the Flash vibrating through a wall make any sense? and how about Kitty Pride?
Just how many girlfriends did Schr�dinger have, anyway?
Was The Uncanny X-Men really a rip-off of The Doom Patrol?

Never knew so much about super heroes!!

Woah! I really never new so many interesting things about physics that could relate to superheroes! I am typical high school student who also has a hard time grasping their mind around all these big complex ideas of physics and science. Not knowing much about physics and especially being able to relate them to superheroes this book really introduced me into numerous new theories, laws, equations, and just down right cold hard physics of superheroes and how they relate to the world around me. The author really does an outstanding job in being able to connect both physics to such an interesting world of superheroes. Kakalios makes it fun and enjoyable experience learning about physics. He puts it in a manner of turning the boring old classroom lectures to a new extraordinary way of learning. It truly does dig deep into all of the scientifically explanations of superheroes. If you have a hard time understanding the ideas of physics I really do recommend this book for you! It is a must have in the world of physics. The detail explained in the book could be written to produce a new text book for physic classes in any type of classroom, because of its wide range in depth of concepts. All of your favorite well known super heroes are listed too! It varies from Superman to the most evil villains in all your old comics. If you were like me and needed a physics book for class or you're just interested in a science book, this is a must purchase!
