About the Author
Sonia Taneja, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Hindi at the Defense Language Institute. A member of the Hindi curriculum development team, she teaches Hindi classes to active U.S. service men and women. She was previously a lecturer in Hindi at Columbia University and a Hindi Regents Exam Writer for the NY City Department of Education.

Good Foundation for Beginners but one omission

This book is a gentle slope for those learning Hindi. As such, it gives the learner time to grasp the essence of the language and build a strong foundation on which to further progress. As many language learners know, compared to the major European languages and Japanese (and now Chinese), resources for many other languages are limited in both quality and quantity. The situation with Hindi is starting to change with the appearance of books such as this one and Delacy's Elementary Hindi, both of which teach Hindi in a systematic way with proper exercises and grammatical explanations. No doubt this book will provide a great foundation for intermediate Hindi study.
There is one problem with this book. I believe it is a significant problem. It doesn't negate the other good qualities of this book, which is why it still deserves 4 stars. Nonetheless, it is hard to use Hindi without knowledge of the normal past tense, as opposed to the past imperfect ("used to"). This book only talks about the past imperfect (I used to eat) and does not convey how to make a simple past sentence such as "I went." Now, this is related to a particle in Hindi that is often used with the past, "ne" which is probably one of the most difficult aspects of Hindi grammar for a beginner to grasp. However, it is not a nuance that can be delegated to a more advanced level since it is difficult to use any language without conjugating verbs in the past tense and this is simply the one aspect of Hindi grammar that one must slog through in order to grasp Hindi. Personally, I wish the past tense were included in this book, so that the habituation of students to it could begin, sooner rather than later.

Wonderful Suppliment to any Hindi Course

I am absolutely loving this book! I have been learning Hindi for almost five years and it has been the only language that I have truly taught myself. When I first started I was shocked at how little there was on such a big language! I basically used all of Rupert Snell's "Teach Yourself" Hindi series to learn it, but I am so glad that workbooks like this are starting to be made for Hindi. This book does a really good job in the first chapter witch teaching the Devanagari script, it even has a whole section on practicing conjuncts which I have not seen yet in any Hindi textbook. the book itself is easy to use and introduces things slowly, it doesn't bang you over the head with grammar or use too much unnecessary vocabulary. I also really enjoyed the little paragraph readings the author adds in at the end of some chapters, something I haven't seen a lot of in Hindi textbooks. Although this book is very good, I wouldn't use it as a standalone resource to learn Hindi, if you are teaching yourself you will need other Hindi textbooks to accompany this, and use this workbook as extra practice. If you are taking Hindi classes and learning from a teacher, I would recommend using this book as a supplement to go along with your class. The only one complaint I have with it is that some of the vocabulary is overly Sanskritic and many Hindi speakers would not use them in everyday speech, this however shouldn't be much of a problem is you are starting out in Hindi. Overall, this is a great book for Hindi learners!

A Useful Resource for Beginners

Sonia Taneja's Basic Hindi is a welcome addition to the Hindi resources for beginners. It provides comprehensible and step-by-step explanations with numerous practice exercises for learning Hindi script, sounds, basic grammar and vocabulary. Its presentation is user-friendly and the answer-key is helpful for self-learners. Both heritage and non-heritage learners can kick-start their study of Hindi language and culture with this book. An accompanying CD would have been very helpful for learning Hindi sounds and picking up native-like pronunciation of dialogues.
